Introducing Nigeria’s New Chief Ombudsman- Honourable Bashir Abubakar, MFR

The African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA) is proud to introduce and warmly welcome Honourable Chief Commissioner Bashir Abubakar, MFR, as Nigeria’s newly appointed Ombudsman. His inauguration, along with 37 Federal Commissioners for Nigeria’s States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was held on 25th September 2024, under the 10th National Assembly, led by Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio.

This leadership transition signals a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s Public Complaints Commission (PCC), with Honourable Abubakar assuming a role that reflects Nigeria’s ongoing dedication to public transparency and accountability.

A Legacy of Service and Leadership

Born on 12th December 1962, Honourable Bashir Abubakar has a longstanding history of public service. After earning his degree from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in 1984 and completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service in 1985, he joined the Nigerian Customs Service. Over a 33-year career, he held several key positions, including Customs Area Controller for Apapa Area Command and Onne Port, and retired as Assistant Controller General (ACG) in 2020.

In the political arena, Honourable Abubakar made an impact by competing in the All Progressives Congress (APC) Kaduna State gubernatorial primary elections and serving as a key advisor in the Presidential and Governorship elections.

Championing Community and National Development

Honourable Abubakar’s influence extends beyond public service into community development. As the Barden Kudun Zazzau, he has led initiatives to build schools, renovate health centers, and provide clean water to underserved communities in Zaria. His focus on empowering youth through vocational training has gained him widespread respect and recognition.

His exemplary service has been recognized with awards from organizations such as the World Customs Organization and NAFDAC. In 2022, he received the national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) from President Muhammadu Buhari.

A Promising Future for Nigeria’s Ombudsman Office

As Nigeria’s new Chief Ombudsman, Honourable Bashir Abubakar is set to continue advancing the principles of justice, fairness, and accountability. His extensive leadership experience and deep commitment to public service position him to make significant contributions to Nigeria’s Public Complaints Commission, ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights and promoting transparency in governance.
