AOMA President's Message on the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Dear Members of the Association of African Ombudsmen and Mediators (AOMA) and Presidents of the Human Rights Commissions of African Countries,

In commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we are honored to share the impactful message from the President of AOMA, Florbela Rocha Araújo. This significant milestone marks a historic commitment to safeguarding the rights, freedoms, and guarantees of every individual globally.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, stands as a beacon of justice and equality for people worldwide. President Araújo emphasizes its profound importance, describing it as a common ideal that all nations and peoples should strive to achieve.

Recognizing the inseparable link between the fundamental rights of individuals and the attributes of the human person, the African continent took a decisive step by adopting the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights in 1981. This commitment underscores the continent's dedication to upholding human rights at both the international and local levels.

President Araújo, the newly elected leader of AOMA and Ombudsman of Angola, congratulates everyone on this momentous occasion. She reflects on the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead in the noble mission to defend the dignity of the human person and advocate for a just and equitable society for all Africans.

The President calls upon Ombudsmen, members of the Executive Committee of AOMA, and Presidents of Human Rights Commissions across Africa to unite in the fight for freedom, dignity, and justice. As defenders of citizens' rights, freedoms, and guarantees, she emphasizes the collective responsibility to champion the cause of human rights in Africa.

In her closing remarks, President Araújo passionately declares: "Happy Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day! Citizens are our concern! The Citizen is our occupation! More rights, more citizenship! More citizenship, more rights!"

Let us join hands in echoing these powerful sentiments and working together to make a difference in the pursuit of human rights in Africa.
