The President of the African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA), Antónia Florbela Rocha Araújo, hosted a meeting on January 7th with the President of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, Wilson de Almeida Adão. The discussion centered on fostering collaboration between AOMA and the Committee to advance the rights and welfare of African children.
During the meeting, Wilson Adão expressed his commitment to establishing a strong partnership with AOMA. He proposed joint activities, training sessions, and exchange programs to enhance the visibility and impact of initiatives dedicated to defending the rights, freedoms, and welfare of African children.
In her address, President Florbela Rocha Araújo commended the initiative, emphasizing AOMA's mission, role, and ongoing efforts to address the challenges facing African Ombudsman institutions. As the Ombudsman of Angola, she highlighted the pivotal role of AOMA in promoting justice and equity across the continent.
President Araújo also underscored the importance of the African Ombudsman Research Centre (AORC), an AOMA initiative that conducts webinars and online training. These programs equip professionals from Ombudsman institutions and African mediators with the tools and knowledge needed to “give a voice to the voiceless.”
In addition, Wilson Adão proposed the establishment of an Angolan Association of International Law. Drawing on experiences gained from international forums, this association would contribute to the production of scholarly articles on international law, further enriching the discourse on children’s rights and related issues.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening collaboration and advancing the shared goal of safeguarding the rights of African children.
